Since 1986, the Commission for Women of Bossier City has strived to address the needs of women in the Bossier Parish Community, The Commission was instrumental in organizing the YEP Program, a program that addressed latchkey kids and gave parents an alternative to after school care. We have also served as ambassadors for the Mayor and City Officials at special functions throughout the City, the most memorable being Bossier City's 100th birthday where we served cake to hundreds of people at the Louisiana Boardwalk. In June of 2009 the Commission held its first ever "Ladies A Fair." There were vendors and booths that addressed any and every need of women. There were also mini seminars that addressed how to write a resume and apply for a job, self-defense, dressing for success, etc. We also had the Shots For Tots and Life Share Blood drive vans.
In keeping with our mission, the Commission established a program eight years ago for high school senior women representing each of the Bossier Parish Schools. The Commission mentors these outstanding young women throughout the entire school year hoping to develop well-rounded young women by providing them a firsthand experience in various components including, legal, economic, civic, cultural and educational areas of the community. Our hope is to create future women leaders and ambassadors for the Bossier City area.
PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
To serve as a clearinghouse for information regarding the concerns of women in the greater Bossier City area.
To meet with the Mayor of Bossier City and City Council in order to submit a report on the work of the Commission;
To serve as an ex-officio board of women to whom the Mayor or other City officials may come and address the City’s concerns regarding women’s issues in Bossier City;
To promote, plan, and assist in implementing programs for women;
To facilitate other organizations and public bodies (i.e. Bossier Parish School Board) in advancing the cause of girls and women in Bossier City;
To foster an across-the-board support of women in the greater Bossier City area.
