Bossier Women Leaders of Tomorrow Mentoring Program

The Bossier Women Leaders of Tomorrow Program was developed to enrich the educational experience of high school senior women in Bossier Parish; develop well-rounded young women by providing them the opportunity to experience first-hand the various components involved in managing the legal, political, economic, cultural and educational areas of the community; encourage the development of community-minded citizens; and create future women leaders and ambassadors for the Bossier area.

Program Description Summary

The Mentoring Committee, which is composed of members of the Mayor's Commission for Women of Bossier City, works with the high school senior counselors from each of the Parish's high schools to select three (3) senior girls who will participate in this program.

This program kicks off every year in September with an Orientation Program involving the incoming mentorees, mentors, commission members, school counselors, and other guests including but not limited to the Mayor of Bossier City and the Superintendent of Bossier Parish Schools.

In addition to the Orientation Program, other events and activities are held throughout the program year for the students. Some of these events are as follows: Bossier Parish Courthouse tour, Life Path Hospice tour and presentation, Bossier Parish historical tour, Celebration of Women's Week luncheon, School Board meetings, Political forum, Centenary Choir presentation “Rhapsody in View”, Bossier Parish Community College Culinary Arts tour and Thanksgiving dinner, Bossier Arts Council presentation, job shadowing, etiquette workshop, Bossier Chamber ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings, and holiday activities in order to give back to the community.

Lead Award Program

Pursuant to our mission, the Bossier Women’s Commission’s Lead Award Program (Leadership Enhancement and Development) has emerged as part of the Mentoring Program to further the pursuit of excellence among Bossier City’s future leaders - our senior high school students. Not only does this program help to increase participation from area schools, but it enhances the overall mentoring experience for the students by offering this incentive for those students who display leadership qualities by excelling above and beyond the expected.

Celebration of Women's Week Luncheon

The Bossier Women's Commission has been involved with this weeklong event sponsored by the YWCA since its inception. It has been our role to sponsor a luncheon during this week.  This event highlights the Mayor's Commission for Women of Bossier City and also allows us to help with domestic violence in this area.

This event is usually held in March of each year and is well-attended by many dignitaries and the community at large.  In addition to a presentation from the YWCA, the luncheon usually includes a keynote speaker or luncheon panel.

Any profits made from the luncheon are given to the YWCA to assist them in addressing domestic violence in the Shreveport-Bossier area.

In 2007, the Mayor's Commission for Women of  Bossier City was named a recipient of the YWCA's annual "Women Who Make A Difference Award."
